Empowering Labour Unions of NFETU (the National Federation of Egyptian Trade Unions)
The project Empowering Labour Unions of NFETU (the National Federation of Egyptian Trade Unions is a two years project supported by the embassy of Netherlands in Cairo aimed at Strengthening the institutional capacities of 140 trade unions working in six industrial sectors: textile, health, food processing, transportation, education and localities to be engaged in policy-making, advocating freedom of association for workers’ groups, safe workplaces, fair wages and the implementation of ILO conventions. Developing five years strategic plans. Promoting tripartite dialogue. “NFETU” involved three components for enhancing the capacities of trade unions affiliated to the National Federation for Egyptian Trade Unions (NFETU), one of the eight independent federations for labour unions, to be more efficient and effective organizations that serve a constructive dialogue with employers and government through being actively engaged in a tripartite dialogue.
The project achieved three results:
1- Leaders of NFETU (particularly at the top and middle management level) are aware of the need of a stronger and more representative NFETU and have formulated actions to achieve this stronger and more representative role;
2- Leaders of NFETU (particularly at the national and multi-sector level) are aware of the need for increased efforts of NFETU to engage in a constructive social dialogue and negotiations with their partners in the tri-partite ILO constitution;
3- A strategic approach and five year plan of NFETU is in place, which includes a long-term capacity development agenda and plan to increase NFETU’s capacity to organise and represent workers and to engage in tri-partite social dialogue.
